World as a Classroom

Your child will have opportunities to explore South Dakota and enjoy new experiences alongside their houseparents and classmates. Each home takes special trips throughout the year that encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, discover new places, and create lasting memories together.

Whether it’s trying a new restaurant, visiting a local attraction, or taking part in a fun activity, these outings help students build confidence and independence while learning everyday life skills. Just as importantly, they strengthen friendships and create a family-like atmosphere that helps every child feel connected, supported, and at home.

As your child completes seventh grade, they’ll have the opportunity to take part in our Annual Cultural Trip—a week-long journey to places of cultural, spiritual, and historical importance to the Lakota people. Traveling through South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming, students deepen their understanding of Lakota history, traditions, and identity by experiencing these meaningful places firsthand.

Before the trip, students learn about each destination in the classroom so they can fully appreciate the experience. When they return, they reflect on what they’ve learned and share their experiences with other students, helping build confidence while inspiring others to learn more about Lakota culture.

Each year, high school students have the opportunity to apply for one of four spots in our Germany Exchange Program. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allows students to explore a new country, experience a different culture, and build friendships that reach across the world.

The journey begins with several days of sightseeing in Europe before students travel to our sister school, Gymnasium Leoninum, in Handrup, Germany. During their week-long stay, students live with host families, attend classes, share presentations about Lakota culture and life at St. Joseph’s Indian School, and learn what it’s like to attend school in another country. They also explore local communities and cultural landmarks alongside their host families.

Through this unforgettable experience, your child will develop confidence, independence, cultural awareness, and a broader understanding of the world. The trip also includes a visit to Frankfurt, where students have the opportunity to thank supporters and share how St. Joseph’s Indian School has impacted their lives.
