Nutrition

At St. Joseph’s Indian School, nutritious meals help students stay healthy, focused and ready to learn. Our Dining Hall serves more than 36,000 lunches each year, while breakfast and dinner are shared family-style in the student homes with houseparents. These daily meals provide nourishment while creating opportunities for students to connect and build a sense of family.

Our culinary team also prepares more than 75,000 CATCH® healthy fruit and vegetable snacks for elementary students each year. In addition to daily meals, they create special menus for campus celebrations like National Family Night, graduations and sacramental celebrations, helping make these milestones even more memorable.

Houseparents prepare breakfasts and dinners that reflect each home’s preferences, with support from the Dining Hall team to ensure meals are balanced and nutritious. Together, they create a welcoming dining experience where every meal is served with care, kindness and a commitment to student well-being.

Personal Living Skills

Your child will learn practical life skills that help them become more confident, independent, and prepared for the future. Through hands-on experiences, students build everyday skills like cooking, budgeting, meal planning, and nutrition while learning how to make healthy choices that support lifelong well-being.

In the kitchen, students do more than prepare meals—they also practice the Lakota value of generosity by sharing what they create with classmates and staff. These meaningful experiences teach teamwork, responsibility, and the joy of caring for others.

Personal Living Skills also helps your child develop healthy habits through our CATCH® program. Students learn about nutrition, physical activity, smoking and vaping prevention, sun safety, and other important wellness topics. By combining practical life skills with healthy living, this class gives your child the knowledge and confidence to make positive choices both now and in the future.
