(Chamberlain, S.D.) – St. Joseph’s Indian School is proud to host its 50th Annual Powwow on Saturday, September 19, 2026, on the school’s campus in Chamberlain, South Dakota. This milestone event marks half a century of celebrating and honoring Native American culture, traditions, and community.
For 50 years, the annual Powwow has welcomed students, families, alumni, donors, and visitors from across the world to gather in celebration of Native American heritage through dance, music, storytelling, traditional foods, arts, and crafts. The event serves as both a cultural celebration and an opportunity to deepen understanding and appreciation of Native American traditions.
“This year’s Powwow is especially meaningful as we celebrate 50 years of preserving and honoring the rich cultural traditions that are an important part of our students’ identities,” said LaRayne Woster, Lead Native American Studies Teacher and Powwow Co-Coordinator at St. Joseph’s Indian School. “The Powwow provides a place where culture is shared, traditions are passed from one generation to the next, and young people can take pride in their heritage. We are honored to welcome guests as we celebrate this important milestone together.”
A highlight of the day will be the youth dance competition, featuring dance styles performed by Native American youth from across the region. Guests will have the opportunity to witness vibrant regalia and skilled dance competitions for boys and girls, showcasing the dedication of young people as they continue cultural traditions through dance.
The day’s activities begin with a Grass Flattening and Powwow Grounds Blessing at 11:45 a.m., followed by the Grand Entry at 12:00 p.m., which officially opens the Powwow celebration. Additional opportunities throughout the day include visiting student homes during the Open House, enjoying traditional foods, and touring the historic Our Lady of the Sioux Chapel.

Guests are encouraged to pre-register at www.stjo.org/powwow. Upon arrival, attendees should visit the Rec Center to register and receive an informational packet. Comfortable walking shoes and a jacket are recommended. Seating is limited, and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Pets, smoking, and camping are not permitted on campus.
The event is free and open to the public, and all are invited to join St. Joseph’s Indian School in celebrating 50 years of honoring Native American culture, traditions, and community.
