Team Sports
Team sports are some of the best opportunities there are to learn collaboration and strength of character, in addition to achieving a healthy level of activity. St. Joseph’s Indian School students benefit from a full array of team sports.
Archery
4th– through 12th-grade boys and girls practice during the winter months and compete at the Lakota Nations Invitational and the Dakota Oyate Challenge.
Basketball – Girls
4th– through 8th-grade girls practice during the early winter months and participate in home and away contests.
Basketball – Boys
4th– through 8th-grade boys practice during the late winter months and participate in home and away contests.
Chamberlain High School Sports
Students in our high school program can participate in the wide menu of sports activities offered at Chamberlain High School.
Cheer
4th-through 8th-grade girls practice and cheer for boys basketball during the late winter months.
Cross Country
6th– 8th-grade boys and girls practice in the fall and compete in six meets around the region.
Dance and Drum Group
In addition to preparation for the annual powwow, dance and drum group host a monthly event in the Rec Center.
Football – Flag
1st– through 3rd-grade boys experience six weeks of league each fall, a Chamberlain community activity.
Football – Tackle
7th– through 8th-grade boys practice during the fall and participate in six home-and-away contests.
Football – Youth
4th– through 6th-grade boys practice during the fall and participate in three-weekend jamboree.
Gymnastics
1st– through 6th– grade girls practice during the late winter months and compete in an end-of-season presentation.
Gymnastics Camp
Each spring, 3rd– through 6th-grade girls attend a three-week camp at Chamberlain High School.
Sacred Hoops – Boys
In early winter, 3rd– through 8th-grade boys participate in this six-week basketball program.
Sacred Hoops – Girls
In late winter, 3rd– through 8th-grade girls participate in this four-week basketball program.
Softball
Each spring, 4th– and 5th-grade boys and girls, and 6th– through 8th-grade boys in girls practice and participate in campus leagues.
T-ball
Each spring, 1th– through 3rd-grade boys and girls practice and participate in campus leagues.
Track
6th– through 8th-grade boys and girls practice and participate in six meets each spring, traveling to local schools.
Traditional Lakota Archery
In addition to contemporary archery, the school has worked with Lakota elder Joseph Marshall III to learn traditional Lakota archery. Teachings on the bow and arrow and the cultural significance of archery to the Plains Indians augment the practice of this tradition.
Volleyball
6th-through 8th-grade girls practice each fall and participate in several home-and-away contests.
Wrestling
Early winter means 1st– through 8th-grade boys practice wresting moves and compete in end-of-season duels.
