St. Joseph’s Indian School’s original Recreation Center was built in 1975. The structure housed a high-school sized basketball court, weight room, pool, game room, individual and small-group fitness room, concession stand, office and locker space. In an era when so many elementary educational institutions are cutting back on physical education and healthy activity, St. Joseph’s Indian School’s holistic approach to student health and wellness spurred us to undertake updates to our Rec Center.
Recreation Center Renovation Underway for Native American Students, Staff and Faculty
In April 2023, shovels broke ground for a new Recreation Center. The school is working with Puetz Design + Build on the project. The first phase of the two-phase plan added a second full gym to the south of the original structure allowing for more activities and a layout that accommodates gymnastics, wrestling, archery and cheer. A new student wellness center has already become very popular with seventh-through-twelfth grades. The new gym, opened Monday, September 9, 2024, includes a second basketball court, too. The area also includes new office space for staff, on-site storage, a new entry way with plenty of rooms for coats and bags, and a game room.
In the second phase, the current gym and concession area will be remodeled, and new hallway bathrooms will be added. A staff and family fitness room will enhance campus wellness.
Following this work, a stand-alone phase will upgrade the current pool locker rooms with new individual showers and ADA accessibility for the pool.
